Kodak Black Says He Is Officially Independent After Completing Capitol Records Deal

Kodak Black says he is entering a new chapter in his career after completing his recording agreement with Capitol Records and becoming an independent artist.

The Florida rapper reportedly shared the news during a recent livestream, telling viewers that he had fulfilled his obligations to the label and could now release music on his own terms. According to reports, his latest project, Kodak The Blessing, served as the final album required under the Capitol deal.

Rather than announcing a dramatic dispute or sudden departure, Kodak appeared to describe the move as the completion of his contract. The development potentially gives him more control over future releases, marketing decisions and the money generated by his music.

Operating independently can provide an established artist with several advantages. Without a traditional major-label structure, Kodak may have greater freedom to determine when his music is released, how it is promoted and which creative direction he wants to pursue.

Independent artists can also retain a larger percentage of their revenue, although they are often responsible for covering expenses that a label would normally handle.

That freedom also comes with additional risk. Major labels traditionally provide funding, distribution support, radio promotion, marketing teams and industry connections. Kodak reportedly indicated that he plans to invest his own money into promoting future music, meaning the success of his independent era could depend heavily on his business decisions and existing fan base.

The rapper’s relationship with Capitol followed his previous run with Atlantic Records. Over the years, Kodak has built a loyal audience through recognizable records, frequent releases and an unpredictable public presence that regularly keeps his name in online conversations.

Fans have responded to the reported announcement with optimism, with many describing independence as the fresh start Kodak may need. Others believe the resources of a major label could have provided more stability as he continues navigating the next phase of his career.

For an artist with Kodak’s name recognition, catalog and established following, independence could offer significant financial and creative opportunities. However, the move will also test whether he and his team can successfully manage the promotional and business responsibilities previously supported by a major label.

Do you think becoming independent is the right move for Kodak Black, or would remaining with a major label have been safer for his career?
