A pregnant Illinois mother is being praised by many for protecting her child after a late-night home invasion ended with an alleged intruder dead and her family safe.
According to authorities, the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. in Joliet, Illinois. The woman, identified in reports as Liv, was home alone with her infant daughter while her partner was away at work when she allegedly heard someone force their way into the house.
Realizing the potential danger, Liv reportedly grabbed her child and a firearm before retreating to an upstairs bedroom closet. Investigators say the suspect, later identified as 36-year-old Shelby Hurd, entered the residence and began moving through the home.
According to police, Hurd allegedly made his way upstairs and entered the bedroom where Liv was hiding. Reports indicate he was wearing gloves and carrying a screwdriver at the time of the incident. Authorities also noted that Hurd had previous burglary convictions and had been released on parole earlier this year.
As the suspect entered the room, Liv reportedly fired a single shot.
The bullet struck Hurd in the head, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
When officers arrived, they found Liv and her baby unharmed in a nearby room. Following an initial investigation, police reportedly classified Liv as the victim in the case. Authorities stated that she has been fully cooperative throughout the investigation and that no charges have been filed against her.
The incident has generated significant discussion online, with many people expressing support for the mother’s actions and emphasizing her right to defend herself and her child during what authorities described as a home invasion.
While the investigation remains open, officials have indicated that the available evidence supports the conclusion that Liv acted to protect herself and her family from an immediate threat.
For many, the story has become a powerful reminder of how quickly ordinary families can find themselves facing extraordinary circumstances.
