Texas BBQ Restaurants Are Closing at an Alarming Rate—And Beef Prices Are to Blame

Texas is famous for its barbecue culture, but many pitmasters say the industry is facing one of its toughest challenges in decades.

Over the past several months, more than a dozen Texas BBQ restaurants have reportedly shut down, including longtime local favorites and newer establishments that had built loyal followings. Some of the businesses had even earned recognition from major food publications, making their closures even more surprising to customers.

Restaurant owners point to one major problem: the rising cost of beef.

According to industry reports, the U.S. cattle herd has fallen to its lowest level in more than 70 years following years of drought, increased feed costs, and shrinking ranch land. The reduced supply has driven beef prices sharply higher, putting enormous pressure on barbecue restaurants that rely heavily on brisket and other beef products.

Pitmasters say the economics have become increasingly difficult. Wholesale brisket prices have climbed dramatically, and after trimming, seasoning, and smoking the meat for hours, restaurants often face costs far above what many customers expect to pay.

As prices rise, many consumers are cutting back. Some restaurant owners report seeing families share meals that they once would have ordered individually, while others say customers are simply eating out less often.

Industry experts warn that the situation may get worse before it improves. Forecasts suggest beef prices could continue rising through the remainder of the year, creating additional challenges for independent barbecue businesses already operating on thin profit margins.

For many Texans, barbecue is more than just food—it’s part of the state’s identity. That’s why the recent wave of closures has sparked concern among restaurant owners and loyal customers alike.

While some businesses are adapting by raising prices or diversifying their menus, others fear that the ongoing cattle shortage could threaten even more iconic BBQ establishments in the months ahead.
